Greens secure UTS bushland
Tuesday, 23 May 2000
The Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon has won a commitment from UTS Vice-Chancellor Tony Blake to permanently protect high quality bushland at the university’s Kuring-gai campus.
Professor Blake ratified a Conservation Agreement this week in order to seek the support of The Greens NSW for the proposed Parramatta-Chatswood Rail Link.
"The Greens have been concerned for some time that a new train station at UTS Kuring-gai could lead to increased development of the site and the loss of the bush there.
"When the Vice-Chancellor came seeking our support, we asked that the university address our concerns by ratifying a Conservation Agreement to cover the bushland.
"This Conservation Agreement will now give the land equivalent protection status as National Park," said Ms Rhiannon.
The local community and UTS have been negotiating a Conservation Agreement for over two years. The 5.4 hectare area at the Kuring-gai campus adjoins Lane Cove National Park and is considered to be high quality bushland.
"The Greens have always supported the Parramatta-Chatswood Rail Link in principle and this commitment, along with the land to be added to Lane Cove National Park at Browns Waterhole, means that we can confidently support this important project." said Ms Rhiannon.
The Transport Administration Amendment (Parramatta Rail Link) Bill 2000 will come before the NSW Parliament this week. The legislation will facilitate the construction of a $1.4 billion, 27 km railway from Parramatta to Chatswood with five new stations, including one at UTS Kuring-gai.
